Before it even begins, the Samuel L. Jackson-led entry into the Sheridanverse has a new name, a new location, and a true heavyweight on the creative side: Taylor Sheridan himself.
Announced last week, the show is no longer being called Nola King. Instead, it has been rechristened as Frisco King. Lest you think the show is moving out west to San Francisco instead of New Orleans, au contraire, mon frere. It’s moving to Frisco, Texas, instead.
And those changes are apparently due to a change on the creative side. Sheridan is going to write all episodes of the first season after showrunner and pilot script writer Dave Erickson departed the project last July.
The show begins filming this month in Fort Worth, Texas. No release date has been announced.
If you have no idea about any of this, Jackson’s Russell Lee Washington Jr. character was introduced during s3 of Tulsa King as an old ally of Sylvester Stallone’s Dwight Manfredi character. Jackson plays an expert hitman who was just trying to get out of the game, but made a new enemy in a mob boss who also wants Manfredi dead. He headed out of town and now, we have learned he is taking a different route.
Sheridan is only credited as co-writer of the Tulsa King pilot and hasn’t contributed to that series otherwise, at least in a formal fashion. He wrote both the first seasons of Yellowstone and Mayor of Kingstown (one of the most underrated shows out there), every Yellowstone spinoff like 1883 and 1923, and every episode of both Lioness (also sneaky good) and Landman (oh, man).
Given that, I like the chances of success for Frisco King.
