The unplanned tradition of me posting what I’m most looking forward to for the month ahead of TV halfway through the month in question continues. I put the * in the headlines because I’m still trying to catch up from the last few months. I’m guessing I’m not alone.
Luckily for me, four of the five on the list haven’t even started yet.
Cape Fear (Apple TV)
S1 | 10 episodes | June 5 debut
Apple is dipping back into the “Let’s take a 90s movie and turn it into a 10-episode season” pool once again with Cape Fear, a remake of the Robert DeNiro 1991 classic by Martin Scorcese that was a reboot of a 1962 movie. Life is IP.
This has some stars with Javier Bardem and Amy Adams and the trailers look good, so why not give it a shot.
Sugar (Apple TV)
S2 | 8 episodes | June 19 debut
The first season came out of nowhere in April 2024 starring Colin Farrell. It’s taken a while to get back here to season two, but, you know, The Penguin. If you haven’t seen it (Sugar, not The Penguin), there’s a fun twist and for an original idea, this works. I can’t tell you the twist or it would ruin season one and I’m not about that life.
House of the Dragon (HBO Max)
S3 | 8 episodes | June 21
The first Game of Thrones spinoff enters the back half of its four-season run this month. I honestly didn’t love the first season, but thought the second one was much better. Less incesty. HoD hasn’t hit the same feels as early GoT, but it’s been worth the watch thus far.
Side note: It breaks my TV heart how bad and disappointing the final season of GoT was. Unforgivable.
The Bear (FX/Hulu)
S5 | 8 episodes | June 25
The final season of the critical wonder arrives later this month, and I don’t know how to feel about it all. I loved the first two seasons and have liked the last two. When the show hits, it HITS but I’m anxious to see what we get here for the last run. It feels like everyone is such a bigger star now that I wonder if they are going to bring it for the end or if this is just one thing the actors are doing out of ten. The surprise one off “Gary” episode we got last month gives me hope, though.
Life, Larry and Pursuit of Unhappiness (HBO Max)
S1 | 7 episodes | June 26
The post-Curb Your Enthusiasm world has begun with this Larry David-powered series looking at famous historical moments with the David comedic touch and familiar cast of characters. From the trailer, it’s essentially Curb but in costumes. Think of it as a multiverse show, I guess. If you loved Curb, I can’t imagine skipping this.
Honorable Mention:
- The Agency s2 (Paramount+): This would require me actually watching the first season.
