When everyone goes to bed on Fridays, I have been drifting into “Hey, I should watch this movie I have never seen that my wife would have zero interest in ” territory. Been there? I bet you have.
This past Friday was The Wrecking Crew, a new movie on Amazon Prime starring Jason Momoa and Dave Bautista — one being a former wrestler and the other being a guy who looks like he could be a wrestler.
I watched it and now, let me help you decide whether you should watch it.
Should You Watch The Wrecking Crew (Amazon Prime Video)?
When did it come out?
2026
What kind of movie is it?
A buddy cop action movie
Where can I watch it?
Amazon Prime Video
Who is it for?
Fans of action movies and Jason Momoa (like my wife)
What’s the commit level?
Two hours.
Any interesting background in the movie’s creation?
In 2021, Amazon MGM won a four-way bidding war for the project which came from an idea from Bautista, Momoa and Jonathan Tropper (Apple TV’s See which starred Momoa). I’m unsure who the other three bidders were or how much MGM won it for. I am sure that everyone got a nice payday, though.
Are there actors the average TV/movie watcher would recognize?
Dave Bautista, JASON MOMOA, Stephen Root, Maia Kealoha (live action Lilo & Stitch), Jacob Batalon, Temuera Morrison and Claes Bang (I did, anyway).
What’s the reaction been?
Pretty favorable by 2026 standards (73/69 Rotten Tomatoes split and 67 on Metacritic). It’s a streaming movie with stars these days: people watch but you only would know by word-of-mouth.
What’s the main plot in a sentence?
A pair of estranged brothers come together when their equally estranged father gets killed, leading to an investigation that brings them together.
How about another sentence?
Bautista and Momoa wreck shop for two hours on a revenge tour while in paradise.
What’s the rewatchability factor?
Low.
If you like these move, you’ll like this one:
Pretty much any 90s/00s buddy cop comedy, Lethal Weapon, etc
Is this a first or second screen movie?
There’s a bit of sag in the middle where you can do some other stuff and not miss anything.
Should you watch The Wrecking Crew?
As I type this, I am in my late 40s so I lived through a time when movies like this were regulars at the movie theatre. (A friend might say I’m an ‘unc’ in that way.) So, I’m more than likely always going to give this a chance, especially if it comes recommended from a friend.
That’s what happened here and overall, this is worth the watch. Bautista and Momoa have great chemistry and it’s totally believable they are brothers. They are funny and serious at the right spots, and have really developed into well-rounded actors to a simple man like myself. I also enjoyed the references to two very famous wrestlers/actors (you’ll have to watch to find out who).
The Hawaiian setting feels natural as does the supporting cast. It’s not exactly original, but it works.
However, this movie didn’t need to be two hours as the real sweet spot is around 90 minutes. As I wrote above, there’s definitely some sag in the middle where 20 minutes less would have made this feel a lot tighter.
There’s a ton of action and some good villains/goons who you want to see get theirs, especially in the final 15-20 minutes which I really enjoyed.
So, should you watch The Wrecking Crew? I’d say yes. It’s not great, but it’s good enough and the type of film that no longer exists in theaters. Just watch it after the kids are in bed as it’s R rated (violence and a lot of f-bombs).
