I’m a big Taylor Sheridan fan and one of his hidden gems in the growing Sheridanverse has been Mayor of Kingstown, the Paramount + show starring Jeremy Renner.
Born in the shadow of the much glitzier Yellowstone universe, Kingstown is the definition of a “gritty” TV show — a term writers like myself use when we don’t know how to describe a show like it.
A better way? It’s really f*king good.
In any case, it was announced by Renner this week that the show will wrap up with its fifth season which I assume will launch in 2026. Unlike the other seasons, it will be eight episodes and not the usual ten.
Why is that and why is the show ending? I assume it’s because Renner isn’t available (perhaps Marvel related?) or maybe there’s not enough story or who really knows. I don’t think it’s because of Sheridan departing for Peacock/NBCUniversal in a few years because, well, it’s a few years.
But if you’ve watched Kingstown since it debuted in November 2021 and are a realistic person, I’m guessing you agree with me that it’s ok it’s coming to an end. That’s not because it’s bad, hard to watch or anything of the like. They have gone through several different stories, big bads, big problems, and big everything.
Series co-creator, actor and the unappreciated Hugh Dillion said in an interview I read that there was originally a seven season plan so hopefully this is a case for Kingstown going out strong vs. slowing fading. It’s hard to imagine another 30 episodes running at a high level as I would a final eight, but we’ll all find out together.
